Muscle-testing

Muscle-testing is a very simple way of discovering our bodies' instant reactions to truth and subtle energies. It's our own consciousness talking to ourselves. (Our selves/plural - we are multidimensional beings!) Our bodies are the tools we may have been looking for 'out there', hoping a scientist will one day devise something that can show us the subtle energies we can feel and experience but not explain. We already have one! Our own body - an incredibly sensitive instrument to detect subtle energies and express our consciousness. In his book Power vs Force, Dr Hawkins explains that he discovered the human body responds to the draining or charging effects of truthful or untruthful statements, and used that to test consciousness itself. He found that we react physically to everything, instantly, by either going weak or strong. (I highly recommend you read this book!) A weakening response can happen hundreds of times during any average television programme, without us consciously registering the fact! But though we may not be aware of it, our bodies are, and react instantly to the reduction in Power (Life Force) - Politicians, beware! I look forward to the time there are muscle-testers visible during party political conferences and broadcasts... Anyway, the method for muscle-testing is very simple. You need a willing partner. Ask them to hold their arm out at a right-angle to the body (the weakest one, so left arm if they're right-handed.) Then ask them to resist while you push down firmly but gently. This is their 'neutral' or base-line level of strength. You need something against which to measure the effects of true or false statements etc. Then, you can start to test whatever it is you're interested in. I would suggest that you first test the true/false response to statements. Ask your partner to say something that is blatantly not true, and test the response. (I went very weak when I was tested for the statement 'I was born on Mars!') Then ask them to say something that is true,(e.g.I was born on Earth) and compare the two responses. (This might be a good way to find out if people were really abducted by aliens! The body cannot lie.) That gives you your basic true/false, or yes/no responses. (Some things make us go stronger/weaker, so it's not totally black and white.) To test thoughts - ask your partner to think of someone/thing they love - then try an angry or hateful thought - you may both be surprised how much stronger and weaker they go in response! ('Power vs Force' has a complete Map of Consciousness, and grades attitudes, emotions and world-views on a scale of 1 - 1000. Anything above 200 strengthens us.) So the basic priciple on which muscle-testing works is that we are conscious of everything that's meaningful to us, and that everything has a measurable effect on our Power, or Life Force. It either increases it, or decreases it, and we respond by physically going strong or weak. Truth has a strengthening effect, and untruth/lies have a weakening effect. Simple! It confirms that everything we say, think or do has either a beneficial or detrimental effect on us. A valuable lesson in the necessity for being consciously in control of our thoughts and emotions - otherwise, we're losing our Power!) That's why it's important to have the one being tested make a statement, such as 'This food (that they're holding) is good for me to eat'. (If you don't have any to hold, they would say the name of the food while thinking about the last time they ate some.) That way, you're testing for the level of truth of that statement, and it's very clear whether what you're testing is beneficial or detrimental to that person. (If you test for the truth of a statement that has no direct meaning for someone, like trying to use it to answer a general knowledge quiz, the response may not be reliable! It's not a way of finding out information for the sake of it, but of finding out what directly concerns and effects each of us.) I have tried getting someone to simply hold different foods, to test for allergy etc, but we found she could override the weakening effect of the diet drink she was holding by thinking 'Strong'! By getting the tester to make the statement "This (name of drink/food) is good for me to drink/eat" you make sure they can't cheat! (Artificial sweetner is extrememly detrimental to most bodies, by the way. Sorry, but it's true!) What's interesting about that, though, is that our thoughts are stronger than physical substances - so perhpas if we remember to bless our food and drink, or think 'Strong' while eating/drinking, we can change the effects on our bodies of even the worst things! I'm not recommending that approach, though. Not yet, anyway! It might be worth thinking about using muscle testing when you have to make tricky decisions - say, between two equally nice houses, or maybe even jobs! It seems to me that you can only reliably test something that have experience of, but it might be an interesting experiment even with job adverts or holiday brochures - what a good idea, I'll try that later! It is a term, which in the past has been associated primarily with the finding of water sources. Modern dowsers dowse for oil & gas, minerals, water, lost objects, lost people with perhaps one of the most common uses today being the use of a pendulum to determine one's state of health and whether particular medicines, supplements, etc. should be taken.Dowsing ToolsA dowsing tool is nothing more than a communication device. In and of itself it has no power and no ability to move. Although no one knows how or why dowsing works, it seems that the movement of the pendulum or rod(s) is controlled through or by your subconscious (or something of that nature).
Most experienced dowsers use all the basic dowsing tools. These are the pendulum, L-rods, Y-rod and the Bobber with the first two being easily made from materials on hand. Any object hung from a piece of string is a pendulum and an old wire coat hanger can be cut and bent into a L-rod. The tool chosen is usually just the most convenient one for the job at hand. As dowsing devices come in all sizes, shapes and materials, it is important only that you choose a tool that you're comfortable with for all instruments work equally well for experienced dowsers.It is important not to impose any beliefs on yourself that a particular tool is better than another. If your favorite crystal pendulum isn't available, a washer hung on a piece of fishing line will work just as well!Learning to DowseDowsing is a skill that anyone can learn. It does take practice but then what worthwhile goal is ever reached without effort? Before you can practice you do need to discover what the movement of the pendulum or rod(s) mean. To simplify matters I will concentrate on using a pendulum. The various rods are employed most often for fieldwork.Most dowsing can be accomplished by three movements - one for a YES/POSITIVE answer, another for NO/NEGATIVE, and a third for MAYBE/NEUTRAL (or a Rephrase the Question) response. Experienced dowsers may also count the number of swings or turns to determine depth of an item being searched for; rely on the movement of the instrument to determine the length of a particular treatment they're doing; etc.The first step is determining what YOUR responses mean. Your responses may vary from another person's but that is fine - what works for you is all that counts!
Take your pendulum and hold the string or chain between your thumb and first finger, about 2 ‡ to 3 inches from the weight at the end.
Sit quietly for a few moments to center and ground yourself. If you find that you are out-of-sorts in some way wait until another time when you are more relaxed.
While slowly swinging the pendulum vertically back and forth, mentally (or out loud) ask the pendulum to show you your YES movement by swinging in a circular direction. This will be clockwise or counterclockwise.
If there is little or irregular movement it might be beneficial to hold the pendulum over your right knee. Repeat the question "Please show me what my YES response is." o Repeat for a NO response (over the left knee if necessary).
Ask for your MAYBE response. Oftentimes it will be a back-and-forth swing at a 45 degree angle. It should be something quite different from the circular motions.
Now you practice, practice, and practice some more! You should start by asking questions that you know the answers to. For example, is my name Mary? Then you can move on to asking questions where the answer can be verified, such as "Are there any messages on my answering machine?" If you get a YES response, ask, "Is there 1 message?" "More than 1 message?" "Is there 2 messages?" and so on.There are a number of charts available commercially or you can make your own. Draw a straight line about 6 inches in length. Then draw a semicircle above the line. Locate the center of the straight line and from this point draw diagonal lines that intersect the semicircle (spread out like a fan). You can add numbers 0 to 100 (in increments of 10) for a percentage chart or mark the names of various remedies (Bach Flower, homeopathic) to see which ones you should take. Anything at all can be marked on the chart. Hold you pendulum at the center of the bottom line and slowly swing it back-and-forth horizontally. Then ask a question such as "What is the percentage of likelihood that it will rain today?" THE WATER: ALKALINITY VS. ACIDITY

Acid - Alkaline Balance
Excess acidity is a condition that weakens all body systems. Excess acidity forces the body to borrow minerals – including calcium, sodium, potassium and magnesium – from vital organs and bones to buffer (neutralize) the acid and safely remove it from the body.
As a result, the body can suffer severe and prolonged ‘corrosion’ due to high acidity – a condition that may go undetected for years.
It affects virtually every person in our society because of the way we live, the way we eat, and the environment we live in. The result is an internal environment where disease can easily manifest, as opposed to a pH-balanced environment, which allows normal body function necessary for the body to resist disease.
It is true that if we have a healthy body we will maintain sufficient alkaline reserves to meet emergency demands. However when excess acids must be continually neutralized, our alkaline reserves are depleted, leaving the body in a weakened, disease-prone condition.
Unfortunately, there are still many practitioners who believe that the body can somehow miraculously and ‘naturally’ balance its pH – as if we are still living in the woods, eating raw foods and herbs.
The truth is so far beyond this ideal. In fact the truth - according to Dr. Lynda Frassetto, acid/alkaline researcher from the University of California, is that we have turned an evolutionary corner. We do not handle acid waste the way we used to.
Her research showed the sheer volume of acid waste our body has to handle has forced it to take drastic ‘war’ style action to preserve its ‘strategic reserves’ – the kidney and liver, our major essential detox organs.
In her study of almost 1,000 ageing subjects, she found that we are now ‘stockpiling’ acid in fatty deposits rather than eliminating it via kidney and liver.
In its infinite wisdom, the body has chosen to save the kidney and liver from degradation by excess acid. Of course, there is a cost. It’s called obesity, lowered immunity, lack of energy and the whole host of acid related diseases we are subject to including cancer, diabetes, osteo-arthritis and more - much more.

Acid Alkaline History
The concept of acid/alkaline imbalance as the cause of disease isn't a new one. One of the first people who talked about the need to alkalize the body was the great "Sleeping Prophet," Edgar Cayce. He always referred to body detoxification with herbs, colonics, fasting, massage, steam baths and diet modification with the aim of alkalizing the body.
Way back in 1933, Dr. William Howard Hay published a ground-breaking book called A New Health Era in which he maintained that all disease is caused by ‘auto-toxication’ (or "self poisoning") due to acid accumulation in the body: "We depart from health in just the proportion to which we have allowed our alkalis to be dissipated by the introduction of acid forming food in too great an amount. It may seem strange to say that all disease is the same thing, no matter what its myriad modes of expression, but it is verily so."
Dr. Robert O. Young, Ph.D. in his book, ‘The pH Miracle’ says it this way; "Those willing to look again, and with clear eyes, will be rewarded with the secrets to permanent health. We can heal our-selves by changing the environment inside our bodies. Potentially harmful invaders, then, will have nowhere to grow and will become harmless."
Unfortunately, according to Sang Whang, author of ‘Reverse Ageing’, even if we eat the best of organic fruit and vegetables, 97% of our food still consists of carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen and oxygen, which will still be reduced to acid waste. He says that it is not what we put into our bodies…it's what stays in our bodies as waste that creates our over-acidic condition and causes us to age prematurely.
More recently, in his remarkable book, ‘Alkalize or Die,’ Dr. Theodore A. Baroody said essentially the same thing: "The countless names of illnesses do not really matter. What does matter is that they all come from the same root cause… too much tissue acid waste in the body!"
Dr. Young says that in terms of acid/alkaline balance, the only difference between 'good' food and 'bad food' is that 'good' food will have less acid waste and more acid neutralizing result.
"Your pH balance depends on what is left after metabolism."
So we'll take a look in this report at what foods, lifestyles and just which supplements contribute to a 'clean house' within; where our metabolism can operate as it is supposed to instead of acting as a continual janitor in an increasingly overloaded toxic warehouse.
Leftover Acid Waste
Very few if any of us are physically capable of ridding our bodies of all the acids we create from food, stress and our own metabolism.
These acid wastes move around the body via the blood and lymphatic system until our overloaded kidneys decide to dump them or, as we have mentioned, they can be stored in fat. Cholesterol and crystallized uric acid are solidified acids that have been dumped within the body for 'later' removal- the 'later' that never comes.
ACID EFFECTS
Acid coagulates blood. Blood has major problems flowing around fatty acids. Capillaries clog up and die. The skin, deprived of life-giving healthy blood, loses elasticity and begins to wrinkle. Even with a face-lift or liposuction, the acid remains and continues its relentless advance.
Without a basic acid/alkaline balancing plan, every part of your body works ever harder to maintain health - because every system; all the organs, the lungs, even the skin – are involved in the maintenance of correct blood pH.
The War Within
Within your body, your organs and cells are totally subservient to your blood. All organs work to keep your blood at a balanced pH, to the point where your body is willing to inflict major damage on organs if they appear to stand in the way of correct blood pH.
If its pH dips from its optimum pH 7.36 down to pH 7.0, you will lapse into a coma and die.
That's why you get such a charge from a can of Cola. Its pH 2.5 acidity sets alarm bells ringing all over your body. Alkaline chemical stores that should be used elsewhere are sacrificed to the call of the needed adrenalin that floods your system.
The 'high' you have learned to expect is no different to the high a drug user gets as he experiences his artificial sensory elevation. It is your body screaming "Help," and you, enjoying the thrill of the fear. It’s "The Real thing."
It's not just a glass of Cola that causes such effect. (32 glasses of neutral pH water are needed to balance one glass of Cola). Most of us already have a running battle within, as our body struggles to counteract acid-producing foods, acid-producing pollution and acid producing stress.
In fact - of all acidifying factors - stress is the greatest. It can neutralize and acidify an alkaline diet with one surge of adrenalin.
Long term acidity: It’s like rust…
It corrodes our tissue, eating into our 96,000 kilometers of veins and arteries. Left unchecked, it eventually interrupts all cellular activities and functions, from the beating of our heart to the neural firing of our brain.
In summary, over-acidification interferes with life itself leading to virtually all sickness and disease! Finally, it ages us…then kills us. When we die, it celebrates by turning the whole body into acid, inviting foreign antagonistic organisms to the party!
Dr. Baroody expresses it very well: "Too much acidity in the body is like having too little oil in the car. It just grinds to a halt one lazy Sunday afternoon. There you are - stuck. The body does the same thing. It starts creaking to a stop along the byways of life and you find yourself in some kind of discomfort. I watch with great concern as people of all classes and lifestyles suffer from this excess." He attributes no less than 68 major health conditions to a prior existent acidic inner terrain.
Why are We Westerners so Prone to Obesity?
Is it just food? Of course, the food we eat, its quantity and quality has a large effect on our waist measurement. But because the body has made a habit of its "last chance" solution (pirating calcium from the bones and teeth) of what to do with excess toxic acid waste, there is another reason we deposit fat.
As Dr Frasset discovered, when we are faced with shortage of options due to an acid- besieged inner terrain, we dump toxic wastes in fatty deposits as far away from the organs and heart as possible; on the buttocks, the chest, the thighs and the belly.
Dr Robert O. Young writes convincingly on the same subject. He sees sugar as an acid and as the reason we are so fat, but not as we have been taught. He says that the body has to protect itself from the excess sugar we consume, and so it co-opts fat - to encase it and protect us from it. "Fat" he says, "is saving our lives".
Alkalinity and Energy Levels
Acidity or alkalinity of our internal fluids has a profound effect even at the individual cellular level in our bodies. Our entire metabolic process is dependent upon balance, right down to the cellular level. Our 75 trillion cells are slightly acidic within, dependent on our inner sea - the surrounding alkaline interstitial fluid to surround them. Without this relationship, no useful chemical or energy interchange will occur because no pH balance exists.
PH opposites - acid and alkaline - in the body are the chemical method for electricity to flow.
Without sufficient "polarity" between the interior of the cell and the fluid surrounding it, the energy of the cell has difficulty flowing into the surrounding tissues. Weight loss and the regaining of energy occur more easily when we take the first steps toward an Alkaline "re-balance."


Alkalinity and Your Blood
Blood is always slightly alkaline (or at least it should be!)
As the only transport system for nutrients to every part of your body, blood cannot afford to be acidic. It needs to stay within a pH range that will maintain resistance to decay or putrefaction, and growth of malevolent organisms.
Therefore, pH 7.365 is the ideal environment in which microorganisms remain in co-existent or symbiotic harmony with the body. Allow the blood to shift slightly either way and results will be felt in every part of the body. Beneficial microforms die, and aggressive microforms sustained by an acidic environment begin to multiply and mutate, taking the form of aggressive, parasitic and pathogenic agents.
Scientists studying live blood using dark field microscopy can see the changes in the blood taking place and correlate it with the progression of the disease process. They witness a repetitive pattern unfolding that has prompted them to state that the over-acidification of the body, caused by improper eating and living, causes a proliferation of those antagonistic microforms which debilitate the body and, if not corrected, may ultimately cause our demise.
The Real Power of PH
If any substance changes from pH 7.0 to pH 8.0, it has become ten times more alkaline. Conversely, if it has changes from neutral pH 7.0 to pH 60, it is 10 times more acidic. As an example, a popular Cola, at pH 2.5 is almost 50,000 times more acidic than neutral water, and needs 32 glasses of neutral (pH 7.0) water to counteract the consumption of one glass of Cola. (Active ingredient: Phosphoric Acid)
You can now see that a change from the normal level of pH in the blood of pH 7.365 to pH 7.0 would mean that your blood would suddenly be around 4 times as acid as it should be. You would die from poisoning by your own blood. This is why every body system is used to support the correct blood pH. You can also understand from this that our blood pH can be affected at any time of the day by a myriad of events; food, drink, stress, pollution, exercise, or beneficially, by meditation, by drinking alkaline water, by deep breathing, even by being happy!
Alkalinity and Parasites
Today more and more doctors and researchers (including most forms of alternative therapists) believe most disease is caused by unbalance in the body. Unbalance occurs in a nutritional, electrical, structural, toxicological or biological equation, allowing germs to flourish.
Imbalance first…germs second. They believe you need to re-establish balance in your body by working with your body, not against it. They say that the healing of chronic illness takes place only when and if the blood is consistently maintained at a normal, slightly alkaline pH.
It’s not an understatement to say that we live in a world plague of "microforms." These include more than simple germs. Yeasts, fungi, viruses and molds are all microforms that exist within our bodies.
It’s not just their presence within us, but the excretions they deposit within us. These toxic wastes are produced when microforms digest glucose, fats and proteins in our body. They steal our food, turn it to poison, and dump it inside us.



Alkalinity and Mineral Assimilation
If only people were aware of what causes minerals to be assimilated or rejected, we could save hundreds of millions in wasted supplement consumption every year. pH balance determines - and limits - mineral assimilation. Every mineral has its own 'signature' pH level that permits assimilation by your body.
If we look at an atomic scale chart of elements, those at the lower end are capable of assimilation over a broader pH range. Those ‘higher’ on the chart need a progressively narrower pH range to be assimilated.
Summarizing, if you are not balanced, your body will simply reject most minerals.
Why is this relevant?
Let's look at iodine as an example. High up on the atomic scale, it requires near perfect pH for its assimilation into the body. Iodine is required for a healthy thyroid gland. But our thyroid will receive no iodine unless the body pH is almost perfect. Thyroid deterioration has been connected to arthritis, heart attacks, diabetes, cancer, depression, obesity, and fatigue.
Today, inadequate mineral supply to the body is extremely common due to the depletion of minerals in our agricultural land.
Alkalinity and Mercury
Dr. W.R. Kellas, Ph.D., co-author of numerous books including Surviving in a Toxic World says that the pH factor plays an important part in ridding the body of mercury and other toxins. He says, "the best pH is around 7.35 because the more acidic the body is (below 6.5) the more it holds on to (heavy) metals. Heavy metals in turn create a high oxidative stress that acidifies the body."
Dr. Kellas's clinic in California sends out pH strips along with their medical treatment and products, similar to those supplies we use with Kangen Alkaline Ionizing machine, to measure body pH. They have consistently seen better results when the pH factor is incorporated in their detoxification program.
Many people who have embarked on an alkaline water regime have found that immediate detoxification occurs, bowel movements normalize after years of malfunction, and energy returns. They also experience classic symptoms of detoxification including headaches, body aches, itching etc. as the toxic, acidic minerals are washed out of the body.
The latest worldwide survey of all current Alzheimer’s research has identified mercury as the prime suspect as causative factor.
Alkalizing With Food
On the last pages of this report you’ll find a list of the acid and alkaline residual properties of many foods. To achieve a balance, health practitioners recommend an 80/20 mix of alkaline and acid foods. As you’ll discover, unless you are like ‘Popeye’ and just love spinach, silver beet, and broccoli, you may find this rule rather hard to keep.
We have one client who has progressed from diet to alkaline powders, to volcanic water with drops, and at last he has found alkaline water. In his words, he just couldn’t beat his acidity with food. However, some dedicated "green food people" do manage, but most enlist the help of alkaline supplements or alkaline water.

Green supplements
There are many formulations of alkalizing green food on the market. They all work, and are a workable answer for a busy parent or business person because you need only down it once a day. Ingredients may include barley grass, wheat grass and all manner of green vegetables and alkalizing herbs. Few are organic so take care in selection.
Calcium and Magnesium
We all see many ads on TV and in magazines for calcium supplements. Calcium will certainly replace lost alkalinity, and it is constantly being raided in the acidic body. After talking to literally thousands of acidic people, we agree that calcium is a viable method for rebalancing, but the question remains about whether it is, as some would say, not actually a cure, but a palliative.
An unbalanced acidic system will always hunger for calcium but unless the cause is corrected, the hunger may continue forever. Be sure to choose a calcium that has the correct ratio of calcium and magnesium in an ionic form for fast assimilation and the vital 2:1 ratio.
Alkaline Water
Sang Whang, scientist, an inventor and a drinker of alkaline water for 17 years, says the problem with trying to alkalize using food is that unless you can afford organic, you will metabolize a large amount of pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and other chemical residues. He adds that if you ‘overdose’ by drinking too much alkaline water, it will simply pass through the kidneys and flush away any germs that may have taken up residence as it passes through.
Alkaline water is used by millions of Japanese and Korean families, and has been a part of their culture since the 1980’s. Alkaline water is used in hospitals, in sanatoriums, and in clinics all over these countries. Note that your tap water may already be slightly alkaline, but Japanese scientists at Shiga University say that you should have water at pH 8.5 or above.

"Subtle energy" is also referred to as chi, Prana, Holy Spirit, manna, ether, or-gone, bio-magnetism and zero-point, among many other names in our current vocabulary. Regardless of the label, it appears to contribute to many phenomena not currently explained by conventional science.
This article is the beginning of a series on discoveries by frontier scientists that provide insight into the multileveled nature of reality and the human senses — and powers that lie beyond the world of the five senses. Such research provides for new hypotheses related to the existence of the three faceted model of the universe, consciousness, subtle energy and physical.
"Subtle energy" refers to the medium through which consciousness acts on the realm of matter and energy. According to a National Institutes of Health study, at least 52 terms are used for "subtle energy": chi, prana, holy spirit, manna, ether, orgone, biomagnetism and zeropoint, among many others in our current vocabulary. Regardless of the label, it appears to contribute to many phenomena not currently explained by conventional science: telekinesis, remote sensing, telepathy, gut or heartbased intuition, healing by prayer or other psychic means, biocommunication between species, etc.
Since these phenomena have tangible effects that can be documented but not explained by the known principles of the electromagnetic (E/M) field of matter/energy, they require that we hypothesize another force through which conscious intent acts on the affected objects, senses and cells.
Some researchers believe a fuzzy part of the electromagnetic spectrum, beyond gamma rays, constitutes this force but that it has not yet been discovered due to the lack of refined instrumentation. Just as the harnessing of radio waves and Xrays had to await the development of new technologies, say these researchers, the development of more advanced machines will enable humans to make use of this fuzzy E/M field.
Others, including myself, work on the hypothesis that this force/field exists in correspondence but parallel to the E/M spectrum and may not have the constraints of that spectrum, such as the speed of light. More elaboration on the implications of this hypothesis for theory — David Bohm and other physicists' concepts of non- local fields of energy or information — and research — space-based experiments that challenge the speed of light limitations on the transfer of information — comes in subsequent articles. Here we focus on the work of one subtle energy researcher: Cleve Backster.
Backster's work in the late '60s and early '70s was an important impetus for the best selling The Secret Life of Plants by Peter Tompkins and Christopher Bird. In the '80s, his work was chronicled by Robert Stone in The Secret Life of Your Cells. His research journey started with the 1966 almost accidental rediscovery that plants are sentient and respond to the spontaneous emotions and strongly expressed intentions of relevant humans. (J. Chandra Bose of India had demonstrated a similar principle in the early part of the 20th century.) Using an instrument to measure galvanic skin responses (GSR), a part of his polygraph or lie detector stock in trade, Backster attempted to determine whether it would measure the moment of re-hydration of a plant whose roots were freshly watered. It did not but to his surprise, the GSR meter registered his threat to burn the plant leaf when he spontaneously thought of the idea.
(Prior to that experience, Backster was noted as one of the foremost experts in the use and interpretation of the results of the polygraph test. Over the last 30 years he has maintained that reputation, and enhanced it. (In fact, his refinements on previous polygraph techniques have earned him a worldwide reputation; they have been validated by the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab.) His mastery of the theory and practice has benefited thousands of specialists who have participated in or learned from the principles taught in his San Diego based Backster School of Lie Detection. He now serves as an advisor or faculty member for several research and educational institutions. These extraordinary professional credentials are important because the same scientific acumen and experimental rigor are applied to his research (observed by me during several days of lab work with Cleve in February 1998) on what he calls "Primary Perception" and others call "The Backster Effect.")
Subsequent to his accidental discovery, an amazing series of experiments demonstrated that the expression of genuine emotion and intent by humans caused measurable reactions (primary perception) in the cells of leaves, fruits, and vegetables. They also reacted to behaviors or changes in states of animals and insects. Conversely, in what Backster labeled "fainting," plants ceased their normal functioning when horrific treatment (burning, scalding, and chemical destruction) was continued on the parallel materials or when the presence of hostile individuals was introduced into the lab. This reaction seems to correspond to Shock Syndrome in humans. More detailed protocols demonstrated that plants possess some discriminatory capability, making them capable of distinguishing individuals who have either destroyed related plants or have very positive intentions; they seem to know who has the sentiments to become a "green thumb."
Experiments with leukocytes (white cells) indicated that a bond of communication exists between an individual's thoughts/emotions and his cells after they are removed from the donor's body. Backster collects cells from the mouth of a donor through a standard clinical procedure, connects them to the electrodes/meter apparatus, and measures their reactivity to the donor's emotional shifts. These shifts can be caused by the donor's voluntary initiatives or their involuntary reactions to events or images such as observed in photographs or movies. Split screen videography of the donor's behaviors and the metered responses of the cell cultures, when other causal or random influences are ruled out, demonstrates some form of communication.
Using a Faraday cage and lead containers to shield the plant, eggs or yogurt used to sense the biocommunication, his experiments appear to rule out the E/M spectrum as the medium of transmission. Tests done with a distance of over three hundred miles between a donor of white cells and the lab indicates the communication bond is not affected by distance. The action and reaction appear to be simultaneous, like the split pair photon experiments by physicists that show one half of the pair reacts instantaneously to actions taken on the other.
Over the last thirty years literally hundreds of experiments have proved the existence of this bio-communication known as the "Backster Effect." My own personal participation in one of these experiments left me without a doubt that a culture of yogurt in a shielded cage showed extraordinary reactions to feeling that were stirred up in me and two female colleagues as we discussed controversial gender and power issues. Interestingly, the yogurt did not react to periods of intellectual discussion about the same issues; it only became agitated when our comments were charged with emotion.
On the basis of this brief review, two characteristics of "subtle energy" communication are clear:
• It happens only when behaviors, thoughts or talk are based in emotions or serious intent. Words or ideas per se do not elicit a reaction unless they have been energized by some force, such as "subtle energy."
• Some process of prior attunement between the sender and the receiver is necessary for the communication link; some higher level of awareness or, at least, frequency resonation is apparently involved.
While we do yet understand the full nature of the communication involved, nor the qualities of the medium, some implications emerge from Backster's research.
• The demonstration of "subtle energy" communication supports the morphogenic field concept postulated by Rupert Sheldrake and others, where an intent-laden force field is transmitted from some beings to others through an as yet unknown medium.
• The reactions occur at the instant of expression of intent, not when a preset test is administered, thereby requiring a rethinking of scientific protocols related to the replication of experiments in the area of psi research.
• The existence of interspecies communication at this level demonstrates the singular and, apparently, universal nature of consciousness.
• The medium involves the apparent existence of a force that can transfer intentions into changes in the physical realm.
These implications alone lead to new hypotheses and experiments for better understanding of the power of inner sense communication, healing prayer, self-healing, and the dynamics of interpersonal hostility and attraction. They suggest practices for inter being openness and protection. Such directions will be explored in more detail in subsequent articles.

ZERO POINT and the SCHUMANN RESONACE

Gregg Braden is currently traveling around the United States and in the media, telling of the scientific proof of the Earth passing through the Photon Belt and the slowing of the Earths rotation. At the same time there is an increase in the resonant frequency of the Earth (Schumann Resonance). When the Earth stops its rotation and the resonance frequency reaches 13 cycles we will be at a zero point magnetic field. The Earth will be stopped, and in 2 or 3 days it will start turning again in the opposite direction. This will produce a reversal in the magnetic fields around the earth and so forth.
Geophysical Condition #1: Earth's Rising Base Frequency
Earth's background base frequency, or "heartbeat," (called Schumann resonance, or SR) is rising dramatically. Though it varies among geographical regions, for decades the overall measurement was 7.8 cycles per second. This was once thought to be a constant; global military communications developed on this frequency. Recent reports set the rate at over 11 cycles, and climbing. Science doesn't know why, or what to make of it. Gregg Braden found data collected by Norwegian and Russian researchers on this; it's not widely reported in the U.S. (The only reference to SR to be found in the Seattle Library reference section, is tied to the weather. Science acknowledges SR as a sensitive indicator of temperature variations and worldwide weather conditions. Braden believes the fluctuating SR may be a factor in the severe storms, floods, and weather of recent years.)
Geophysical Condition #2: Earth's Diminishing Magnetic Field
While earth's "pulse" rate is rising, her magnetic field strength, on the other hand, is declining. According to Professor Bannerjee of the University of New Mexico, the field has lost up to half its intensity in the last 4,000 years. And because a forerunner of magnetic polar reversals is this field strength, Prof. Bannerjee believes that another reversal is due. Braden believes that because these cyclical Shifts are associated with reversals, Earth's geological record indicating magnetic reversals also marks previous Shifts in history. And, within the enormous time scale represented, there were quite a few of them.
What is a Schumann Resonance?
Believe it or not, the Earth behaves like an enormous electric circuit. The atmosphere is actually a weak conductor and if there were no sources of charge, its existing electric charge would diffuse away in about 10 minutes. There is a 'cavity 'defined by the surface of the Earth and the inner edge of the ionosphere 55 kilometers up. At any moment, the total charge residing in this cavity is 500,000 Coulombs. There is a vertical current flow between the ground and the ionosphere of 1 - 3 x 10^-12 Amperes per square meter. The resistance of the atmosphere is 200 Ohms. The voltage potential is 200,000 Volts. There are about 1000 lightning storms at any given moment worldwide. Each produces 0.5 to 1 Ampere and these collectively account for the measured current flow in the Earth's 'electromagnetic' cavity.
The Schumann Resonances are quasi standing wave electromagnetic waves that exist in this cavity. Like waves on a spring, they are not present all the time, but have to be 'excited' to be observed. They are not caused by anything internal to the Earth, its crust or its core. They seem to be related to electrical activity in the atmosphere, particularly during times of intense lightning activity. They occur at several frequencies between 6 and 50 cycles per second; specifically 7.8, 14, 20, 26, 33, 39 and 45 Hertz, with a daily variation of about +/- 0.5 Hertz. So long as the properties of Earth's electromagnetic cavity remains about the same, these frequencies remain the same. Presumably there is some change due to the solar sunspot cycle as the Earth's ionosphere changes in response to the 11-year cycle of solar activity. Schumann resonances are most easily seen between 2000 and 2200 UT.
Given that the earth's atmosphere carries a charge, a current and a voltage, it is not surprising to find such electromagnetic waves. The resonant properties of this terrestrial cavity were first predicted by the German physicist W. O. Schumann between 1952 and 1957, and first detected by Schumann and Konig in 1954. The first spectral representation of this phenomenon was prepared by Balser and Wagner in 1960. Much of the research in the last 20 years has been conducted by the Department of the Navy who investigate Extremely Low Frequency communication with submarines.

POSSIBLE OUTCOMES
1. Time will appear to speed up as we approach Zero Point. A 24 hour day will seem to about 16 hours or less. Remember the Schumann Resonance (or "heart beat" of Mother Earth) has been 7.8 cycles for thousands of years, but has been rising since 1980. It is at about 12 cycles at present. It stops at 13 cycles.
2. Zero Point or the Shift of the Ages has been predicted by ancient peoples for thousands of years. There have been many shifts including the one that always occurs every 13,000 years at each half of the 26,000 year, Procession of the Equinox.
3. Zero Point or a flip of the magnetic poles will probably happen soon, within the next few years. It could possibly synchronise with the Earth's four cycle biorhythm that occurs every 20 years on the 12th of August. The next occurance is 12th August 2003. The Philadelphia Experiment and Montauk Project (secret military time travelling) both locked up to the 12th August/20 year biorhythm.
4. It is said that after Zero Point the Sun will rise in the west and set in the east, approx. Past occurances of this change have been found in ancient records.
5. Interestingly, the New World Order plan to be in power by 2003. This may or may not happen, depending on many factors and agendas. Stay centred and follow your intuition.
6. The Zero Point flip will probably introduce us to the 4th dimension. Here, everything we think or desire will instantly manifest. This includes love and fear. Our INTENTION will be of utmost importance.
7. Most technology that we know will cease to operate. Possible exceptions could be technology based on so called "Zero Point" or free energy.
8. Our physical body is changing as we approach Zero Point. Our DNA is being "upgraded" to 12 strand. A new light body is being created. We are becoming more intuitive.
9. The Mayan Calendar predicted all the changes that are occuring now. They say we are going beyond technology and back to the natural cycles of nature and the Universe. By 2012 we will have entered the 5th Dimension (after the flip to the 4th Dimension at Zero Point).
10. All this information is not fearful. Be prepared for changes that will bring in the new age of light. We are going beyond money and time where fear based concepts are totally dissolved.

Acid Alkaline History
The concept of acid/alkaline imbalance as the cause of disease isn't a new one. One of the first people who talked about the need to alkalize the body was the great "Sleeping Prophet" Edgar Cayce. He always referred to body detoxification with herbs, colonics, fasting, massage, steam baths and diet modification with the aim of alkalizing the body.
In 1933 Dr. William Howard Hay published a ground-breaking book called A New Health Era in which he maintained that all disease is caused by ‘auto-toxication’ (or "self poisoning") due to acid accumulation in the body: "We depart from health in just the proportion to which we have allowed our alkalis to be dissipated by the introduction of acid forming food in too great an amount. It may seem strange to say that all disease is the same thing, no matter what its myriad modes of expression, but it is verily so."

Unfortunately, according to Sang Whang, author of Reverse Ageing, even if we eat the best of organic fruit and vegetables, 97% of our food still consists of carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen and oxygen, which will still be reduced to acid waste. He says that it is not what we put into our bodies…it's what stays in our bodies as waste that creates our over-acidic condition and causes us to age prematurely.
More recently, in his remarkable book Alkalize or Die, Dr. Theodore A. Baroody said essentially the same thing: "The countless names of illnesses do not really matter. What does matter is that they all come from the same root cause… too much tissue acid waste in the body!"
Dr. Young says that in terms of acid/alkaline balance, the only difference between 'good' food and 'bad food' is that 'good' food will have less acid waste and more acid neutralizing result. Your pH balance depends on what is left after metabolism.
So we'll take a look in this report at what foods, lifestyles and just which supplements contribute to a 'clean house' within; where our metabolism can operate as it is supposed to instead of acting as a continual janitor in an increasingly overloaded toxic warehouse.
Leftover Acid Waste
Very few, if any, of us are physically capable of ridding our bodies of all the acids we create from food, stress and our own metabolism. These acid wastes move around the body via the blood and lymphatic system until our overloaded kidneys decide to dump them or, as we have mentioned, they can be stored in fat. Cholesterol and crystallized uric acid are solidified acids that have been dumped within the body for 'later' removal- the 'later' that never comes.
Acid effects
Acid coagulates blood. Blood has major problems flowing around fatty acids. Capillaries clog up and die. The skin, deprived of life-giving healthy blood, loses elasticity and begins to wrinkle. Even with a face-lift or liposuction, the acid remains and continues its relentless advance.
Without a basic acid/alkaline balancing plan, every part of your body works ever harder to maintain health - because every system; all the organs, the lungs, even the skin – are involved in the maintenance of correct blood pH.
The War Within
Within our body, our organs and cells are totally subservient to our blood. All organs work to keep our blood at a balanced pH, to the point where our body is willing to inflict major damage on organs if they appear to stand in the way of correct blood pH.
If our blood pH dips from its optimum pH 7.36 down to pH 7.0, we will lapse into a coma and die.
That's why we get such a charge from a can of cola. Its pH 2.5 acidity sets alarm bells ringing all over our body. Alkaline chemical stores that should be used elsewhere are sacrificed to the call of the needed adrenalin that floods our system.
The 'high' we have learned to expect is no different from the high a drug user gets as he experiences his artificial sensory elevation. It is our body screaming "Help!" while our mind is enjoying the thrill of fear. It’s "The Real Thing."
It's not just a glass of cola that causes such an effect. (32 glasses of neutral pH water are needed to balance one glass of cola). Most of us already have a running battle within, as our body struggles to counteract acid-producing foods, acid-producing pollution and acid producing stress.
In fact - of all acidifying factors - stress is the greatest. It can neutralize and acidify an alkaline diet with one surge of adrenalin.
Long term acidity: It’s like rust…
It corrodes our tissues, eating into our 96,000 kilometers of veins and arteries. Left unchecked, it eventually interrupts all cellular activities and functions, from the beating of our heart to the neural firing of our brain. In summary, over-acidification interferes with life itself, leading to virtually all sickness and disease! Finally, it ages us…then kills us. When we die, it celebrates by turning the whole body into acid, inviting foreign antagonistic organisms to the party!

The body does the same thing. It starts creaking to a stop along the byways of life and you find yourself in some kind of discomfort. I watch with great concern as people of all classes and lifestyles suffer from this excess." He attributes no less than 68 major health conditions to a prior existent acidic inner terrain.
Why are We Westerners so Prone to Obesity?
Is it just food? Of course, the food we eat, its quantity and quality, has a large effect on our waist measurement. But because the body has made a habit of its "last chance" solution (pirating calcium from the bones and teeth) of what to do with excess toxic acid waste, there is another reason we deposit fat.
As Dr Frasset discovered, when we are faced with a shortage of options due to an acid-besieged inner terrain, we dump toxic wastes in fatty deposits as far away from the organs and heart as possible; on the buttocks, the chest, the thighs and the belly.
Dr Robert O. Young writes convincingly on the same subject. He sees sugar as an acid and as the reason we are so fat, but not as we have been taught. He says that the body has to protect itself from the excess sugar we consume, and so it co-opts fat - to encase it and protect us from it. "Fat," he says, "is saving our lives".
Alkalinity and Energy Levels
Acidity or alkalinity of our internal fluids has a profound effect even at the individual cellular level in our bodies. Our entire metabolic process is dependent upon balance, right down to the cellular level. Our 75 trillion cells are slightly acidic within, dependent on our inner sea - the surrounding alkaline interstitial fluid that surrounds them. Without this relationship, no useful chemical or energy interchange will occur because no pH balance exists.
PH opposites - acid and alkaline - in the body are the chemical method for electricity flow.
Without sufficient "polarity" between the interior of the cell and the fluid surrounding it, the energy of the cell has difficulty flowing into the surrounding tissues. Weight loss and the regaining of energy occur more easily when we take the first steps toward an alkaline "re-balance."


Alkalinity and Your Blood
Blood is always slightly alkaline (or at least it should be!)
As the only transport system for nutrients to every part of your body, blood cannot afford to be acidic. It needs to stay within a pH range that will maintain resistance to decay or putrefaction, and malevolent organisms.
Therefore, pH 7.365 is the ideal environment in which microorganisms remain in co-existent or symbiotic harmony with the body. Allow the blood to shift slightly either way and results will be felt in every part of the body. Beneficial microforms die, and aggressive microforms sustained by an acidic environment begin to multiply and mutate, taking the form of aggressive, parasitic and pathogenic agents.
Scientists studying live blood using dark field microscopy can see the changes in the blood taking place and correlate it with the progression of the disease process. They witness a repetitive pattern unfolding that has prompted them to state that the over-acidification of the body, caused by improper eating and living, causes a proliferation of those antagonistic microforms which debilitate the body and, if not corrected, may ultimately cause our demise.
The Real Power of PH
If any substance changes from pH 7.0 to pH 8.0, it has become ten times more alkaline. Conversely, if it has changes from neutral pH 7.0 to pH 60, it is 10 times more acidic. As an example, a popular cola, at pH 2.5 is almost 50,000 times more acidic than neutral water and needs 32 glasses of neutral (pH 7.0) water to counteract the consumption of one glass of cola. (active ingredient: phosphoric acid)
You can now see that a change from the normal level of pH in the blood of pH 7.365 to pH 7.0 would mean that our blood would suddenly be around 4 times as acidic as it should be. Wee would die from poisoning by our own blood. This is why every body system is used to support the correct blood pH. You can also understand from this that our blood pH can be affected at any time of day by myriad events; food, drink, stress, pollution or exercise. It can be beneficially affected by meditation, by drinking alkaline water, by deep breathing, even by being happy!
Alkalinity and Parasites
Today more and more doctors and researchers (including most forms of alternative therapists) believe most disease is caused by unbalance in the body. Unbalance occurs in a nutritional, electrical, structural, toxicological or biological equation, allowing germs to flourish.
Imbalance first…germs second. They believe we need to re-establish balance in our body by working with our body, not against it. They say that the healing of chronic illness takes place only if and when the blood is consistently maintained at a normal, slightly alkaline pH. It’s not an understatement to say that we live in a world plague of "microforms." These include more than simple germs. Yeasts, fungi, viruses and molds are all microforms that exist within our bodies.
It’s not just their presence within us, but the excretions they deposit within us. These toxic wastes are produced when microforms digest glucose, fats and proteins in our body. They steal our food, turn it to poison and dump it inside us.



Alkalinity and Mineral Assimilation
If only people were aware of what causes minerals to be assimilated or rejected, we could save hundreds of millions in wasted supplement consumption every year. pH balance determines— and limits— mineral assimilation. Every mineral has its own 'signature' pH level that permits assimilation by our body.
If we look at an atomic scale chart of elements, those at the lower end are capable of assimilation over a broader pH range. Those ‘higher’ on the chart need a progressively narrower pH range to be assimilated. Summarizing, if you are not balanced your body will simply reject most minerals.
Why is this relevant?
Let's look at iodine as an example. High up on the atomic scale, it requires near perfect pH for its assimilation into the body. Iodine is required for a healthy thyroid gland. But our thyroid will receive no iodine unless the body pH is almost perfect. Thyroid deterioration has been connected to arthritis, heart attacks, diabetes, cancer, depression, obesity, and fatigue.
Today, inadequate mineral supply to the body is extremely common due to the depletion of minerals in our agricultural land.
Alkalinity and Mercury
Dr. W.R. Kellas, Ph.D., co-author of numerous books, including Surviving in a Toxic World, says that the pH factor plays an important part in ridding the body of mercury and other toxins. He says, "The best pH is around 7.35 because the more acidic the body is (below 6.5) the more it holds on to (heavy) metals. Heavy metals in turn create a high oxidative stress that acidifies the body."
Dr. Kellas's clinic in California sends out pH strips along with their medical treatment and products, similar to those supplies used with Kangen Alkaline Ionizing machine, to measure body pH. They have consistently seen better results when the pH factor is incorporated in their detoxification program.
Many people who have embarked on an alkaline water regime have found that immediate detoxification occurs, bowel movements normalize after years of malfunction and energy returns. They also experience classic symptoms of detoxification, including headaches, body aches, itching etc. as the toxic, acidic minerals are washed out of the body.

Alkalizing With Food
On the last pages of this report you’ll find a list of the acid and alkaline residual properties of many foods. To achieve a balance, health practitioners recommend an 80/20 mix of alkaline and acid foods. As you’ll discover, unless you are like Popeye and just love spinach, silver beet, and broccoli, you may find this rule rather hard to keep.
We have one client who has progressed from diet to alkaline powders, to volcanic water with drops, and at last he has found alkaline water. In his words, he "just couldn’t beat [his] acidity with food." However, some dedicated ‘green food’ people do manage, but most enlist the help of alkaline supplements or alkaline water.

Green supplements
There are many formulations of alkalizing green food on the market. They all work and are a workable answer for a busy parent or business person because you need only down it once a day. Ingredients may include barley grass, wheat grass and all manner of green vegetables and alkalizing herbs. Few are organic so take care in selection.
Calcium and Magnesium
We all see many ads on TV and in magazines for calcium supplements. Calcium will certainly replace lost alkalinity, and it is constantly being raided in the acidic body. After talking to literally thousands of acidic people, we agree that calcium is a viable method for rebalancing, but the question remains about whether it is, as some would say, not actually a cure, but a palliative.
An unbalanced acidic system will always hunger for calcium, but unless the cause is corrected, the hunger may continue forever. Be sure to choose a calcium that has the correct ratio of calcium and magnesium in an ionic form for fast assimilation and the vital 2:1 ratio.
Alkaline Water
Sang Whang, scientist, inventor and a drinker of alkaline water for 17 years, says the problem with trying to alkalize using food is that unless you can afford organic, you will metabolize a large amount of pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and other chemical residues. He adds that if you ‘overdose’ by drinking too much alkaline water, it will simply pass through the kidneys and flush away any germs that may have taken up residence as it passes through.
Alkaline water is used by millions of Japanese and Korean families, and has been a part of their culture since the 1980’s. Alkaline water is used in hospitals, sanatoriums and clinics all over these countries. Note that tap water may already be slightly alkaline, but Japanese scientists at Shiga University say that you should have water at pH 8.5 or above.

EMF Hazards

EMF is, technically speaking, an acronym for Electro-Magnetic Field(s). A reference to "EMF Hazards" presupposes that electromagnetic fields from sources ranging from high power lines and/or microwave ovens to bedside lamps and/or electrically heated water beds, may constitute a health hazard. Mainstream science denies there is any problem here -- despite the accepted evidence that during the Cold War the Russians were directing intense Microwaves toward the United States Embassy in Moscow, and thereby causing considerable distress on the part of the employees and officials in the building.
There is also considerable evidence in numerous scientific studies that support the claim that EMF from high power electrical transmission lines do in fact cause health effects on humans ranging from feelings of anxiety and headaches to greatly increased incidences of leukemia in and about transmission line towers and overhead lines. The fact mainstream science fails to accept such "proof" is likely due almost entirely to Corporate Politics and the very understandable reluctance on the part of the electrical power generating industry to admit responsibility for decades of inflicting pain, suffering and death on unsuspecting victims. Such an admission would result in law suits which would make the story (and movie) of Erin Brockevich pale in comparison.
Roy Beavers, , a self-styled "EMF guru", has provided an extensive report on what he entitles, The Fundamental Dangers of EMF. Written in 1998, the report followed a January meeting of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), whose agenda was a discussion of the EMF rapid review process. According to Mr. Beavers, "they are doing a good job of conducting an open and unbiased review process which is not tilted to protect industry interests at the expense of the public. But, ‘The proof,’ as they say, ‘is in the pudding.’
"The distortions of truth (which have occurred so frequently in the past in this EMF saga) rarely occur at a working level. The dishonesties begin to appear when the work of dedicated, objective and conscientious working scientists is passed up "the chain of command" to their bosses higher in the bureaucracy. It is there that political and economic (read "profits") considerations begin to distort the true science which began at the bottom (not always, but usually!!!)."
The EMF problem includes everything from cellular telephone antennas to transmission and/or distribution electrical power lines, all of which cause health problems including: breast cancer, childhood leukemia, "reproductive hormone" (prostate cancer), Alzheimer’s and/or Parkinson’s disease (the latter which may have the strongest EMF associations).
Beavers writes that, "it now seems quite possible that all of the above adverse health conditions are possible as a result of EMF exposure -- and more! In the end, it may not be easy to say which is the most adverse EMF/health situation because it appears more and more likely that: (a) EMF exposure from whatever source can be cell damaging (thus health threatening), if sufficient in strength and duration... probably through the process of promoting or allowing the buildup of free radicals which damage human cells, and (b) it does not appear that the frequency (wave-length, ELF or RF, etc.) of the exposure is defining -- though, until we know more, it is perhaps all right to say: some frequencies may have a greater propensity for the induction of cell and tissue damage than others.
"Most important of all, the exposure strength required to cause the suspect illnesses cited above is now clearly conceded to be in the ranges of those exposure conditions which are -- at least in certain situations -- occurring in our home and work environment. The picture that is emerging is one of potentially broad overall health impact -- not just childhood leukemia or breast cancer or brain cancer. It is a picture of exposure and effect that is so broad -- and so buried within the historical process of worldwide electrification that has occurred over the past 100 years -- that it could easily have been missed for many more years had not a few prescient observers (like Robert Becker or Nancy Wertheimer) spoken out forcefully... and in spite of the condemnation that was heaped upon them by an establishment medical and science community which ‘did not see the forest for the trees.’
"EMF researchers, who have been reporting the results of their research efforts to their colleagues at the recent NIEHS-sponsored symposia (at Durham in March of 1997 and most recently at San Antonio in January of 1998), are also saying that EMF induced biological damage is (1) probably cumulative, and (2) is subject to the natural cell ‘healing’ processes which can work to overcome much of the free radical damage.
"The latter ‘healing process’ is thought to at least partially explain why some people appear to be less vulnerable, thus less readily affected, while others (perhaps with ‘weaker’ immune systems) are more susceptible. But of course this natural healing process really is not a result of the EMF scenario, per se, it is a normal process that occurs to a greater or lesser extent in all illnesses. The role played by genetic disposition is likely to be at work in the EMF scenario, though there has been very little research in that direction so far."
It seems clear that EMF causes many kinds of adverse health conditions. Furthermore, it can cause problems via many different avenues of biological interactions. Even if the damage is limited to impacting the immune or hormone systems, the overall potential health impact is enormous -- particularly in light of the potentially hundreds of millions of people who are being exposed to rapidly increasing amounts of EMF.
"The amount of biological activity is the key. Without doubt, the amount of biological activity that is being induced within the human race by EMF exposure of all kinds and frequencies... has been multiplied on the order of a few thousand-fold to a few million-fold since the introduction of electricity into our lives over a century ago. In the beginning, we simply did not see the results in terms of health consequences. Whereas ‘science’ once considered such ‘non-ionizing’ radiation to be biologically benign (at least at levels of exposure then being experienced by the human population), it is now virtually certain that not all of it is benign! It is far more active than was previously imagined!"

Two major challenges to proving the existence of EMF Hazards involve the determination of risk factors, i.e. how likely is it that the power lines, etceteras are caused a statistically significant variation in the health of individuals bathed by the flood of EMF energy, and two, precisely where and how is the EMF acting from a biological point of view in order to cause the health problems.

The MYTH of Low Risk Factors...
The principal method science has to track the existence and causes (or increases within the human population) of such health conditions as cancer, leukemia, etc., is that branch of science known as "epidemiology." In its simplest form, epidemiology compares "groups" of the population which have been exposed (to a suspected health-damaging cause or "risk") to other groups that have not been exposed (called "the control group"). The result of this comparison provides the "O.R." the observed risk factor or "odds ratio."
An O.R. of 1.0 means that the groups which were compared resulted in "no observable difference." The incidence of the illness, i.e., was 1 to 1. Neither group showed any higher propensity to contract the disease. If, on the other hand, the "exposed" group showed 50% more incidence of the illness than the "unexposed" control group, then the O.R. factor would be described as "1.5," meaning that the exposed group was 50% more likely to contract the illness; and therefore it could be inferred that the "risk" exposure being compared was a causative or contributing factor to the illness in some way. An O.R. of 1.5, however, is not considered to be a very "strong" association. If an O.R. of 2.0 or 3.0 were found in the comparison then it could be inferred that the "strength" of that causative or contributing risk was stronger (than in the 1.5 case).
From this basic explanation, it should be obvious that the epidemiologist conducting the study needs at least two conditions if he/she is going to produce a valid study:
(1) The composition of the two groups being compared should be as nearly similar as possible. Ideally, in fact, the researcher wants the two groups to be out of the same population, the same socio-economic population, the same racial background (because of possible genetic confounders) and/or the same neighborhood population. In short, the goal is to "match" the two groups as perfectly as possible in every respect except one!!!
(2) The researcher does not want his two groups to have been exposed to the same risk (or the same "amount" of risk) that is being measured in the comparison. When comparing two groups in the case of tobacco exposure, for example, the researcher wants his control group to be a group of non-smokers (or as much so as he can find) which he will then compare to a group of smokers to determine the O.R. of whatever health condition is being studied (e.g., lung cancer).
If this contrast between "exposed" and "non-exposed" cannot be based upon two groups that have genuinely different levels of exposure (though otherwise similar and of the same "population"), the O.R. obviously will tend to "level out" in the direction of 1 to 1... No contrast (or very little contrast) will be observable!!!!
Now, do you see the problem that is being presented to the epidemiologists when they are studying exposure to EMF? EMF is so widespread ("ubiquitous" is the word currently being used) in our modern industrial electrified western societies that it is becoming more and more difficult to find control groups which have not been exposed! Or have been minimally exposed!
The result is a tendency for the EMF study comparisons to "level out" at or near the 1 to 1 ratio. Clearly, there exists in such studies a built-in "bias" against obtaining results that would show the true adverse health effect of the EMF exposure... That effect is being lost in the "leveling out" that occurs when "exposed" groups are in fact being compared to so-called "non-exposed" groups... but which, in fact, have been exposed (perhaps substantially), though we really cannot tell how much!
That is what is being found in the EMF epidemiology studies: A series of study results that "bias" the outcome in the direction of low odds-ratios (on the order of 1.5 to 2.5) -- even though the "real world" of "mother nature" may be causing real damage that would justify much higher O.R. results. (On the order of 2.5 to 5.0 perhaps.)
How many times have you heard that "utility spokesman" say: Oh, these "risk factors" (O.R.s) are so low that they are showing that the problem "caused by the power lines" (or TV antennas, etc.), "is just not very great." That statement is a myth... It is certainly not "scientific."
The scientific truth is this EMF health threat is substantially greater than "second hand smoke" (O.R. 1.2 to 1.5), for example, though that is the kind of comparison that is often made by industry spokesmen or their "friends" in the scientific community.... Still, look at what the government has been willing to do about second hand smoke!!
Yet many, many more people are being affected by EMF exposure than second hand smoke! The EMF RAPID report, when it is finally prepared upon the completion of these symposia meetings... should lay to rest this "low risk factor" myth once and for all......
At San Antonio, a group of about ten epidemiologists was asked specifically about this aspect. No answer. No denial. No argument. Every scientist who is working on this issue -- certainly every epidemiologist -- knows that this ugly reality is not being explained to the public. Why? Because it literally destroys the argument EMF is a minor problem!!!!
Guru says: EMF is no minor problem.... It is a major problem... And it is not getting any better. It is getting worse, fast... as that "frenzy" of electrical/electronic technological advances and commercial sales to the public (not to mention governmental and military activity) charges onward under the watchful eye of an indifferent government that is consciously determined to be oblivious to the long term health consequences for ALL of mankind.
Where and How the EMF is Acting, Biologically...
Present research findings are leading the scientific community to a concentration on the hormone systems as the locus of most impact, particularly melatonin (but also estrogen, the prostate and seratonin). These internal communication or control systems of the body, if even slightly diminished or disrupted, can have enormous albeit indirect consequences on health. (At San Antonio, Dr. Robert Liburdy, the melatonin/tamoxifin researcher, speculated that he thought he was seeing "not only reduced melatonin production... but also reduced melatonin performance" under EMF exposure as low as 12 mG.) Hormone performance is considered to be a major contributor to a healthy immune system.
Recently, DNA damage has also been identified as a potential problem area as a result of both RF and ELF exposure. DNA damage can have direct consequences in cancer.
I think it is also noteworthy that (what I perceive as) a growing acceptance of a "dose-response" relationship between the "amount" of EMF exposure and "a more observable resultant consequence" is beginning to be accepted in the community. Perhaps the best and most recent example of this is the work done at the Karolinska Institute (by Maria Feychting) in Sweden, which found an indication of a dose-response effect while comparing the records of those who had significant EMF exposure both at work and at home (living near power lines) as contrasted with those who had the home exposure but not the work exposure. The picture described above is not reassuring -- particularly in terms of its public health impact, the public-health information that is not being conveyed to the public, the public policy that is sorely needed -- and soon -- but is not even in a state of public awareness that would allow such consideration, and finally, in terms of "how" our system of science/government/private enterprise does not work well to come to grips with such problems. Our system makes it easy to lie, procrastinate, and sweep such problems "under the carpet" rather than deal with them on a "public interest" basis.

Avoiding Colds and Flu’s

Introduction
The best way to beat colds and flu’s are to avoid them in the first place. You can do this by making it difficult for the germs to gain entry, and by enhancing your body’s natural defenses. This is not so difficult to do when you know your enemy and understand your body’s natural defense mechanisms. Here are some important points to understand:
Colds and flu’s are caused by viruses
Antibiotics do not affect viruses
Cold and flu germs outside a host body usually die in three to seven days
Most colds and flu’s are caught by placing your infected hands to your eyes or nose
While rarely fatal, the flu can lead to pneumonia, a serious disease with a much higher mortality rate
Most cold and flu medications only mask symptoms; you remain infectious to others
The only cure for colds and flu’s is your body’s immune system
We can either aid or inhibit the body’s immune system by things we eat, drink or do
Let’s make sure we mean the same thing when we use words like "cold" and "flu." Here are some definitions:
Cold: "A viral infection characterized by inflammation of the mucous membranes lining the upper respiratory passages and usually accompanied by malaise, fever, chills, coughing, and sneezing. In this sense, also called common cold, coryza." †
Influenza: "An acute contagious viral infection characterized by inflammation of the respiratory tract and by fever, chills, muscular pain, and prostration." †
Gastroenteritis (aka: Stomach Flu, 24-hour flu, intestinal flu, food poisoning): "Inflammation of the mucous membrane of the stomach and intestines" † characterized by vomiting and diarrhea. Although sometimes called "flu," gastroenteritis is not caused by influenza viruses; it can be caused by various other viruses or by bacteria.

Gastroenteritis is a totally different condition from "the flu" (influenza). We are not referring to gastroenteritis when we talk about fighting the flu and the discussion herein does not apply to it.

A note regarding Avian influenza ("bird flu")
While avian influenza is exotic and scary, and the possibility of an influenza pandemic needs to be taken very seriously, the truth is there is little to distinguish this new threat from ordinary influenza, which is itself a very serious disease. The primary difference lies in the potential of avian influenza to leave a larger death toll in its wake. Our best defense, therefore, against avian influenza is the same as other forms of influenza: Appropriate hygiene and building a strong immune system.
A note regarding Anthrax and SARS
The initial symptoms of anthrax, SARS and smallpox often mimic symptoms of colds and flu’s. While SARS and anthrax outbreaks make headlines, relatively few people die from them. Relatively few people die directly as a result of the flu too, however there are many more cases of the flu (by orders of magnitude) than these other diseases, and a neglected or improperly treated flu too often leads to pneumonia, which kills thousands of people each year. (Most of the thousands of flu attributed deaths each year are actually pneumonia deaths secondary to a neglected flu infection.) One thing we learned from the anthrax attacks in the winter of 2001-2002 is that a runny nose is a rare feature of anthrax. According to the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC): "A person who has a runny nose along with other common influenza-like symptoms is by far more likely to have the common cold than to have anthrax." So maybe you can take some comfort in your runny nose!

Avoiding Colds and Flu’s
To avoid colds and flu’s you must understand your enemy, know its weaknesses, and know how to parry its attacks. The other line of defense is to maintain a strong immune system and not do anything to undermine it.
Colds and flu’s are caused by viruses. They tend to enter our bodies through our noses and eyes, although the flu may also enter through the mouth as well. From there, they make their way into our sinuses where they set up camp and breed. Usually we infect ourselves by placing our own virus contaminated hands to our faces (such as by rubbing our eyes or noses). Less frequently, we can catch them from airborne sources. We will discuss how to best avoid both sources.
Infectious disease is currently one of the top five causes of death in the United States. 80% of all infectious disease could be eliminated by more frequent and proper washing of the hands with soap and water. This is also the first line of defense against colds and flu’s. The first rule to avoiding infection is: Never put your hands in your eyes or to your nose without washing them first. The eyes are especially important as we often rub our eyes, or flick out the "sand" from our tear ducts, without thinking about it. This nearly automatic response can get us into real trouble. A good way of avoiding this is to wash the "goop" out of our eyes each time we wash our hands. Out of consideration for others, you should also wash your hands immediately after putting them in your eyes or up to your nose. If everyone did both of these things, colds and flu’s would be uncommon in our society.
Regarding hand washing. Soap kills some of the germs on your hands directly, and helps to loosen those it doesn’t kill outright so they are more effectively washed off your skin. You should lather up your hands well for at least 20 seconds, then rinse-off the soap thoroughly for another 20 seconds. Be sure to include the areas under you nails when you wash your hands, as they are a lurking ground for germs. Lather up between your fingers, including the tops of your hands, from fingertip to wrist. Drying your hands, studies have shown, is also an important step in removing germs. At home, it is a good idea to have a separate hand towel – which is changed frequently – for someone who is sick. In public restrooms, using a paper towel, where available, is more effective than use of a hand dryer. Also, in public restrooms, use a paper towel to turn off water faucets and open restroom doors after washing (to keep from reinfecting your hands, or picking up new germs). [Note: Use of antibacterial soap is neither necessary nor recommended.]
Airborne risks. You should make a habit of keeping your nasal passages clear and of breathing through your nostrils. Your nose is designed to filter out airborne dust and germs. In his book The Nature Doctor, Dr. H. C. A. Vogel writes:
"The nose is designed in such a way that the mucous membranes keep dust and bacteria from entering the body, provided, of course, that we breathe in and out through the nose and that it is not blocked. It is true that we can also breathe through the mouth rather than the nose, but this will make us lose the benefit of the built-in screening device, exposing us to a higher risk of catching colds and infections. Mouth-breathing poses a definite threat to the throat, the bronchial passages and the lungs."
You can give your nostrils a little help by using a xylitol (pronounced zie-li-tall) nasal spray or wash, as described below. This spray is useful in prevention (it makes it difficult for viruses to gain a foothold) as well as treatment (it dislodges viruses from their colonies, reducing their numbers).
It is important to keep your feet warm. Yes, your mother has told you this time and time again, but you thought this was just an old wives’ tale. After all, colds and flu’s are caused by viruses, right? Well, most folklore has its basis in fact. Cold feet cannot cause a viral infection, but they can undermine your defenses thereby opening the door to them.‡ Interestingly, there is a connection between your feet, your nasal passages, and therefore the likelihood of getting sick. Dr. Vogel, once again in The Nature Doctor, writes:
"The nose walls (conchae) react to cold feet. When the feet are cold the walls contract, become cold and dry and cause the glands to stop functioning, so that dust and bacteria are no longer filtered out. It is easy to see why a cold will almost inevitably result, followed by catarrh or a runny nose. You can now understand why it is important to avoid getting cold feet…"
So if your mucous membranes are functioning properly, you are unlikely to catch colds and flu through the air. But if your feet are cold, this defense is weakened and you are at greater risk.
[‡ Some studies were done years ago to see if cold feet could cause colds. A seemingly pointless study with a foregone conclusion, as it was already known at the time that colds are caused by viruses. The studies involved placing the feet of test subjects in tubs of cold water for several hours without exposure to viruses. Hardly a simulation of the real-world conditions. It confirmed what we already knew: People who are not exposed to cold viruses do not catch a cold, even when their feet are chilled. Unfortunately, these studies are often cited to suggest that there is no connection between cold feet and catching colds. This is an example of junk-science, and the need to understand a study’s methodology before drawing conclusions about its results.]
It should be noted that you are usually exposed to far more cold or flu germs on your hands than through the air. You are therefore much more likely to catch a cold from putting virus-laden hands to your nose (or eyes) than from breathing the same air as a person who has a cold or flu. However if an infected person is doing a lot of sneezing – particularly without covering their face – the risk is increased. But the more your mucous membranes are functioning properly, the lower your risk from all sources. This is usually sufficient to eliminate normal airborne risks, but will only mitigate the risk of hand-to-face infection. Use of a xylitol nasal spray can reduce the threat further by making it difficult for viruses to gain a foothold, and by washing away those that have.
It is also valuable to make a habit of breathing deeply most of the time. Very often, we get into the habit of shallow breathing. There are a number of things bad about this, but as far as this discussion is concerned, it has to do with expelling old, stale air completely out of the lungs and replacing it with fresh air. Obviously, there are times when more shallow breathing might be in order (say perhaps while one in a crowded elevator where the air may be sickly). Most of the time, however, it is best to more completely replenish the air in the lungs and not allow stale air to linger for long periods.
Keep an eye on the humidity of your environment. Artificial heating tends to be very drying, so you may consider buying a humidifier for home to keep your air moist enough that it doesn’t dry out or dehydrate your sinuses. Likewise, an air filter in an indoor environment, especially a HEPA type filter, can help remove airborne dust and germs. Negative ions have a demonstrated air cleansing and germicidal effect. Some filters incorporate negative ion generators. Negative ions also make the air smell fresh (it’s the same smell as after a refreshing thunderstorm). An unfortunate side effect of negative ion generators is that they will tend to blacken a nearby wall (over a course of many months or years). This is because the negative ions attach themselves to airborne germs (killing them) or to dust particles in the air, and pull them toward the positively charged wall.
If someone in your household takes ill, it is wise to put up a separate hand towel in the bathroom for the healthy folks to use. This extra precaution costs nothing and just may prevent a loved one from getting sick. Remember, sick people aren’t feeling well and might not be as diligent as they should about lathering up properly. Also, as mentioned previously, it has been shown that the process of drying hands on a towel is part of the germ removing process of washing, so some germs are being transferred to the towel. This is reason enough to have a separate towel for those who are sick, and to change the towel frequently.
Try to keep sick folks out of the kitchen, and assume that things like door knobs and light switches are infected. Turn off water faucets, open doors and flip light switches with your elbows.
Be very careful after handling money. Money passes from hand to hand, person to person, frequently. You can bet that the money in your wallet has plenty of germs any time of the year. During cold and flu season, money is a potential source of infection. Credit cards and checks are less of a problem, unless the clerk to whom you hand your credit card or check cashing ID is sick. Beware of any pens at the counter — like money, they’ve been in quite a few different hands lately. Get in the habit of carrying and using your own pen for signing credit card vouchers and writing checks. ATM keypads and public telephones fall into the same category as pens and money; consider them potential sources of infection.
Clerks (and baggers) at your local grocery store are another potential source of infection. Since they handle money during cold and flu season, they are very likely to get sick during that time of year (especially if they rub their eyes without washing their hands after handling money). Since the clerk (and the bagger) handles every item you’re buying, your first line of defense is to try to pick a healthy cashier. This can be difficult if the clerk is using medication which suppresses cold or flu symptoms. Watch and listen for signs of illness and change lines if necessary. Complain to store management about their policy of allowing infectious people to handle your purchases. I have told obviously sick baggers not to touch my purchases and have bagged the items myself. Some stores now have self-scan isles. I generally dislike these as a general rule, but do use them during cold and flu season because it reduces the number of hands touching my food items. The touch-screens and other items at these stations, however, have to be considered infected. Use your knuckles to operate the controls.
Be wary of the mail. Was your letter carrier ill? You probably have no idea. How about someone in the mail sorting room? Mail passes through many hands – and touches many other pieces of mail – before it gets to you. Avoid putting your hands to your face after handling the mail during cold and flu season. Open envelopes and discard them, then wash your hands and read the mail. Of course what’s inside the envelope might contain viruses too, so still exercise caution about putting your hands to your face.
Avoid hospitals and doctor’s offices. If you can’t avoid them, be extra cautious in these environments. Sick people congregate in these places, so you can expect the air, door knobs, elevator buttons, hand rails, etc. to be infested with infectious agents of all kinds. Best to plan routine visits around this season, to avoid exposure.
Door knobs and handles. Anything commonly handled by the public, such as door knobs, elevator buttons, hand rails, etc., are suspect especially during cold and flu season. Avoid putting your hands to your face after handling these. Wash your hands frequently.
Avoid flying on commercial airlines. Several investigations have implicated the air recirculation systems aboard modern jets with the spread of infectious diseases. The problem isn’t limited to just colds and flu either. Virtually any airborne disease is a problem, and drug resistant strains of Tuberculosis have spread this way. When you do fly, remember to keep your hands away from your nose and eyes, breathe through your nostrils not your mouth, use a xylitol nasal spray, and do everything to enhance your immune system a few days before and after the flight, including taking elderberry extract (mentioned below), a probiotic with fiber, increasing your vitamin intake (a full spectrum multi-vitamin), increase your vitamin C intake, eat raw, freshly-crushed garlic, and abstain from alcohol, caffeine and sugary foods.
Get plenty of sleep. Potent immune enhancing compounds are released during sleep and many immune system functions are greatly increased by an adequate night’s rest. Studies have demonstrated that people who are consistently deprived of sleep have impaired immune function. If you require an alarm clock or some other external stimulus to wake, you’re not getting an adequate night’s rest. During the winter months your body requires more sleep, so it’s perfectly normal to sleep longer on winter nights.
Drink more water; avoid soft drinks and caffeine. Most people are chronically dehydrated and this impares the immune system. Soft drinks and caffeinated beverages do not count toward "drinking more water" and, in fact, subtract from it (as they generally act as diuretics). Consider using Emer’gen-C (in moderation) in lieu of soft drinks (see section on vitamin C below).
Avoid sugary foods. Sugar can decrease the activity of the immune system for up to five hours. If you have a sweet tooth, discover stevia or xylitol. Stevia is economical, but more difficult to master. Xylitol can actually stimulate the immune system.
Stevia is a natural herb which is between 100-300 times sweeter than sugar. Unlike aspartame (NutraSweet) or sucralose (Splenda), stevia is actually safe and even has many beneficial properties. Aside from containing no calories, it can actually help stabilize blood-sugar levels (thus it is both safe and beneficial to diabetics), can help fight gum disease, and has many other benefits too numerous to mention here. Stevia is temperature stable, so unlike most artificial sugar substitutes, it can be used in baking. Ironically, the US’s FDA has banned stevia as "an unsafe food additive" while sanctioning its use as a "food supplement." So according to the FDA, it’s "unsafe" in small amounts (as a sweetener), but safe in larger doses (as a supplement). Most observers feel this is a wholly political move to protect both the sugar and artificial sweetener industries. Unfortunately, this means you won’t find commercially prepared foods containing stevia in the United States, although you will find them in many other countries throughout the world. You might find stevia in some teas in the US, however, if it’s included for "medicinal purposes." For more information on this remarkable herb, visit: http://www.stevia.net/.
Xylitol, technically a sugar-alcohol, is neither a sugar nor alcohol in the conventional sense. It too is a safe "sugar substitute" (use 1:1), but is low on the glycemic index (7) so it can be safely used by diabetics. It is actually good for your teeth (it will help harden tooth enamel and discourages bacteria which can harm your teeth) and can help boost your immune system. Even more interesting is the fact it can be used in a nasal spray wash which can be used to fight colds and flu (see below). It occurs naturally in many fruits & vegetables and is even produced by the human body. Commercial sources are usually birch trees and corn cobs. It tends to be rather pricy when used as a sugar substitute. It cannot be used in yeast breads as the xylitol inhibits yeast growth, nor in hard candies because it won’t crystalize like sugar. Other than that, it is a complete sugar substitute with half the calories. [Note: In large quantities, it can lead to loose bowels; the effect diminishes with regular use.]
Red Wine. It has been found that those who drink a glass of red wine daily are about 20% less likely to contract the flu. It is believed that this may be related to the vitamins and antioxidants present in red wine (but largely absent in white or blush wines). It is less clear, however, that drinking red wine when sick with a cold or flu would be beneficial as the alcohol would tend to depress the immune function during a time of illness. Other studies have shown a daily glass of red wine is beneficial to the heart, and lowers the odds of developing Alzheimer’s disease and other types of age-related dementia. Excessive alcohol use, however, is definitely detrimental to health.
Elderberry extract (see next section below) can be taken as a prophylactic which fortifies the immune system.
We have not said "get a flu shot" for several reasons. Vaccinations are neither risk-free nor as safe as the public has been lead to believe. Almost all vaccines contain preservatives, toxins and other harmful non-vaccine compounds, such as mercury (considered a toxin at any level), aluminum, formaldehyde, ethylene glycol (antifreeze), phenol, etc. Flu vaccinations put you at greater risk of contracting Alzheimer’s disease (largely due to the mercury and aluminum); one study concluded five consecutive vaccinations increased the risk ten-fold. There is a demonstrated link between the flu vaccine and Guillain-Barre Syndrome, which can result in paralysis or even death. Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (aka Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) has also been linked. Nasal flu vaccines have an added risk of inducing Bell’s palsy in some people. Deaths (and disabilities) do occur from vaccinations (although proponents will argue that vaccines save more lives than they take). A certain percentage of people receiving a vaccine are expected to contract the disease they are being inoculated against. Contrary to what some "authorities" claim is only a "myth," a flu shot can actually give you the flu; this is quite true and well documented. Flu vaccinations in particular are a gamble because the vaccine serum takes many months to produce, so the folks who manufacture the vaccine must accurately predict — more than a year in advance — which strains of flu will be prevalent when the vaccine is ready for market. This is as hard as it sounds, and when the guess is wrong (as it often is), the vaccine will be ineffective (such as the 2004-05 season). And even if they guess correctly, you’ll only be protected against three strains of the flu. You could still catch one of the many strains not included in the vaccine. Flu vaccine efficacy varies from year to year, but it is all too common to find well controlled studies in which you are actually more likely to become ill if you’ve had the shot. Many believe that vaccines in general may be damaging our immune systems and opening the door for diseases such as AIDS.†† Several studies have shown that the flu vaccine in particular does indeed weaken the immune system. Given all the potential dangers, plus the hit-or-miss nature of the flu vaccine, it is hard to justify, much less endorse, flu vaccinations. Nonetheless, the flu can be very serious and is capable of killing, especially the elderly, so you must decide for yourself if the risks associated with getting a flu shot outweigh the perceived benefits. Just be aware that the decision may not be as clear-cut as you may have once thought.
[†† It is now well established that the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), generally cited as the cause of AIDS, has been in the human population since at least 1959 (Kinshasa, Zaire). Perhaps since 1930 (± 20 years). This raises the question why the AIDS epidemic didn’t occur decades sooner? One possible answer is that our immune systems are normally capable of combating the HIV virus, unless compromised or weakened to begin with. It has been suggested that multiple vaccinations do just that. It is only a theory and may not be true, but it does make one wonder.]

Combating/Recovering from Colds and Flu’s
Okay, if you couldn’t elude the flu or a cold, what to do? You’ve heard the drill before: First, get plenty of rest. Sleep is one of the most powerful immune system stimulants. Drink lots of fluids. Most people are chronically dehydrated and water is essential to proper immune system function. Don’t exert yourself. Your body needs its energy reserves for a strong immune function. Stay home from work or school. You will not be productive there, you’ll prolong your illness, and you’ll unnecessarily expose others. Be considerate to everyone: stay at home, get plenty of bed rest, read a good book, and wash your hands frequently to avoid spreading it to others.
Drink lots of water, natural fruit juices, or vegetable juices. Adding 5-15 drops of liquid GSE (Grapefruit Seed Extract) 2-3 times a day to your juice will have an immune system boosting effect.* Avoid soft drinks, alcohol, coffee and caffeine. You should try to drink at least 8oz of non-chlorinated water each hour. Try to drink continuously throughout the day. Water is essential to help your body fight illness; your immune system cannot function properly without adequate quantities of water. It will also combat dehydration. Dehydration can be fatal. Drinking adequate amounts of water will also help to abate cold and flu related headaches.

Caffeine and many soft drinks act as diuretics which will actually deplete your body of water. Caffeine or sugar can undermine your body’s immune system. Alcohol, while generally beneficial in moderate amounts when healthy, will both depress the immune system and dehydrate you when you’re sick. It will prolong your illness. The exception might be a glass of red wine, which is vitamin and nutrient rich.
If you are having trouble drinking enough water, perhaps due to a sore throat, try adding some lemon juice, natural fruit juice, warming it a bit, or making a naturally non-caffeinated herbal tea. You might also consider making some hot lemonade from fresh lemons, or hot grapefruit juice. If you feel the need to sweeten it, use Stevia (liquid or powder), orange juice, honey, or grape juice — never refined sugar nor aspartame (NutraSweet). Xylitol (a natural Sugar-Alcohol compound), is an acceptable "sugar" substitute, and actually has immune system benefits which could help to combat cold and flu (however it is still relatively hard to find in the US; one source is, ironically, Coffee Wholesalers).
Elderberry extract. Elderberry, a relative of the blueberry, has been found to have powerful anti-viral properties. Elderberry extract may be used to treat a cold or flu, or taken as a prophylactic which fortifies the immune system. Sambucol is a popular brand, however it is mostly glucose syrup. My feeling is that the APITHERAPY HONEY organic ELDERBERRY extract with Propolis product by Honey Gardens is far superior. It contains raw honey and propolis (both of which are immune boosting) and no added sugars.
I started to come down with a cold in the fall of 2005 and immediately began to aggressively treat it with the Honey Gardens elderberry extract, heavy use of a homemade xylitol nasal spray, lots of water, vitamin C, garlic, a probiotic and plenty of sleep. I had a nasty runny nose. My symptoms, however, lasted for only a single day! I felt really good by the second day, but continued with the "sick" regimen for the next week. It is important to understand that while you may feel fine, your immune system is still waging a major battle and you need to support it all you can to avoid a relapse. Especially important is to get adequate sleep.
Probiotic. A probiotic will fortify your intestinal flora, which are essential for proper digestion and nutrient absorption. This is key to good health and a strong immune system. Studies have shown that patients who begin a course of probiotics with fiber a few days prior to surgery are less likely to pick up a post-operative infection during their hospital stays. This demonstrates a strong connection between intestinal flora and immune function. The fiber – which provides the friendly bacteria both food and sanctuary – can be as simple as an apple or banana. Primal Defense is a fine probiotic product. Other ways of fortifying your intestinal flora include eating unpasteurized* fermented or cultured foods, such as yogurt (without added sugars), sauerkraut, miso, cheese, apple cider, apple cider vinegar, etc. Unfortunately our society is enamored with pasteurization, so finding beneficial unpasteurized live foods can be difficult. For this reason, a probiotic regime is recommended for optimal health.
* Pasteurization is not necessary if proper sanitation procedures are employed in food handling and processing. Too often pasteurization is used to cover up poor sanitation practices. Pasteurization always results in a nutritionally inferior food product. Avoid it whenever you can.
Drink non-chlorinated water. Chlorinated water kills beneficial intestinal flora. Don’t drink it. Use a filter to remove chlorine from your drinking water.
Sore throats (from colds and flu’s) result from irritation by drainage of nasal fluids into your digestive tract. A simple lukewarm salt water gargle will sooth a sore throat and promote healing far better than any drugstore concoction. Pickling salt is preferred, but regular table salt will do. Make the water as salty as you can tolerate, without making it more salty than is comfortable. The salt will tend to sooth the inflamed tissue and promote healing. Adding a few drops of liquid GSE (Grapefruit Seed Extract) can be beneficial. For a gargle, add one drop per ounce (so about three to six drops for the average gargle preparation). GSE has an anti-bacterial and anti-viral effect yet is safe if ingested (in fact many people take it as a supplement to boost overall immune system function).
Runny nose. An effective treatment for a runny nose is to use a xylitol nasal spray. A more aggressive treatment is to sniff up salt water (or a xylitol wash). Some people find that lying down is helpful. A natural decongestant, such as Herbal Vapors salve (a non-petroleum based Vicks/Mentholatum alternative), available from Mountain Rose Herbs, may provide relief. You’re best off avoiding decongestant medications you find at the drugstore. While these can be effective in suppressing symptoms, they will also prolong your illness. Aggressive treatment with a xylitol spray, and elderberry extract, will do far more to curtailing your illness.
Let your appetite be your guide. Do not force yourself to eat unless you are hungry. If you are hungry, soup is often a good choice. It will help warm you as well as provide nourishment. If you are not hungry, consider drinking natural fruit or vegetable juices for nourishment. Ice cream is best avoided due to its sugar content and cooling effect. A fruit sherbet or sorbet, while not ideal, would be a better choice. So you have a sore throat and you ate the ice cream, sherbet, or sorbet anyhow: Follow it with a hot beverage to warm you back up.
Increase your intake of vitamin C. The "Recommended Daily Allowance" (RDA) is far too low. A healthy adult should consume around 2000-4000 mg’s (2 to 4 grams) of vitamin C daily. For a sick person, the amount increases. Your body can actually tell you how much vitamin C you should be taking. Vitamin C, taken in sufficiently large doses, loosens the bowels. When you reach the level of vitamin C intake which causes loose bowels, you are taking too much vitamin C. This is called the "bowel intolerance test." Take up to that amount, then back off slightly (assuming your bowels aren’t loose due to diarrhea, of course). When you’re sick, the amount of vitamin C required to loosen your bowels will greatly increase, thus indicating an increased need for this vitamin. Don’t be surprised if this goes up to 18-20 grams of vitamin C. In very rare instances, this has been known to go as high as 100 grams in certain individuals. In general, Dr. David Williams and Dr. Julian Whitaker each advise: When sick, take 1 gram of vitamin C every hour you’re awake.
Linus Pauling personally took 18 grams of vitamin C daily, and suggested a minimum of 12 grams for the average person. Although Dr. Pauling based this recommendation on some very compelling reasoning,* this amount seems excessive (as it would be hard to acquire this much vitamin C through diet alone). This begs the question of bioavailability and the form of vitamin C used. Dr. Pauling’s recommendations may have been based on ascorbic acid, which is what most vitamin manufacturers call "vitamin C," even though it is only a vitamin C precursor. Bioavailability is thus an important factor in considering vitamin C dosage. Most vitamin C supplements are based on ascorbic acid because it is relatively inexpensive, chemically stable and stores well. Ascorbic acid is only an intermediate form, which the body must convert to mineral ascorbates to use; it is not particularly bioavailable. More bioavailable forms are offered by only a few companies. Also, bioflavonoids are known to help the body utilize vitamin C and enhance vitamin C bioavailability.
[* Dr. Pauling found that most mammals’ bodies, except those of humans and guinea pigs, manufacture vitamin C. What’s more, he found that they all seemed to manufacture the same amount of vitamin C per pound of body weight. Dr. Pauling took that constant and multiplied it by the weight of the average human to arrive at his recommended daily dose of 12 grams of vitamin C. Dr. Pauling said that vitamin C strengthens the tissues in blood vessels and that adequate vitamin C intake would virtually eliminate heart disease and stroke. Extreme vitamin C deficiency is known to cause scurvy, a condition in which the blood vessels literally fall apart, so there seems to be merit to Dr. Pauling’s reasoning as regards heart disease and stroke.]
Two good sources of vitamin C, both of which come in (1000mg) packet form and are dissolved in a glass of water, are Emer’gen-C and Ola Loa. Ola Loa is a more complete multi-vitamin product, contains fewer sugars, but is also more costly. A good compromise is to take one Ola Loa daily, and use additional packets of Emer’gen-C as needed for your desired daily dose of vitamin-C. It is a good idea to distribute your vitamin C intake throughout the day; do not take it all at once.
Keep warm. Do not neglect your feet; keep them warm too. Put on extra socks, maybe wool socks, wrap them in a blanket, whatever it takes. If you are cold or chilled, drink hot herbal tea or some other hot non-caffeinated beverage. Nothing is quite as warming as drinking a hot beverage. You need to be drinking lots of fluids anyhow.
Take zinc. Zinc lozenges, dissolved in the back of the mouth and allowed to flow down the back of your throat has been known to stop a cold dead in its tracks in certain individuals. It is thought to shorten the duration in other individuals. This must be done at the first signs of a cold! Note: If you feel nauseous, discontinue use as this is a sign of zinc toxicity.
Eat raw, freshly-crushed garlic. Garlic has anti-viral properties and boosts the immune system in general. It is possible to stop a cold dead in its tracks in three days by eating four cloves of freshly-crushed raw garlic three times a day (along with lots of water, vitamins and rest). Although you may find yourself oozing garlic from your pores and smell offensive to your loved ones! You can ease back on the garlic if you supplement with elderberry extract and aggressively use a xylitol nasal spray. Once you start feeling better it is vitally important to continue with water, nutrition & rest and to allow your body to recover before returning to normal activities and habits. Failure to do so can result a very nasty relapse.
Note: Deodorized garlic tablets are ineffective in this regard because it is the "smelly" compounds in garlic which give garlic its anti-viral and anti-bacterial effect. Also, it is likely that no single compound in garlic confers all its therapeutic effects. It is likely to be a synergy of compounds. Any refinement, such as deodorizing, is likely to remove beneficial compounds. One example of the synergy of compounds contained in garlic are alliin and an enzyme called allinase. In whole garlic, these two constituents are segregated, but when a garlic clove is "damaged" (e.g. crushed) the two mix together to quickly produce allicin: A pungent, potent-antibacterial sulphur compound which is not present in whole garlic! Heat destroys allicin, and so does age (it chemically breaks down in one to seven days). One final note: "Allicin potential" of deodorized garlic supplements is a marketing gimmick to convince you the product has value; it does not. Don’t be fooled and don’t waste your money on this sham.
Do not take commercial cold or flu remedies from the drugstore. These preparations do not fight infection and can actually lengthen the duration of illness. Symptoms like a runny nose and fever actually help your body fight infection; suppressing them with drugs undermines the healing process. A saline-xylitol wash, on the other hand, works synergistically with your body to flush out viruses (and provide temporary relief). There is another drawback to commercial medications: they can mask your symptoms making you feel artificially well. This entices you to over-exert yourself when what you really need is to be taking it easy and getting lots of rest. This usually prolongs your illness and the time you remain infectious to others. (Smart employers insist that sick people take time-off rather than come into work and spread sickness around.)
Pain relievers such as aspirin, ibuprofen, acetaminophen, etc. should not be needed if you’re adequately hydrated and keeping your nasal passages clear (use a saline-xylitol wash).
Fever, in most cases, should not be viewed as a problem; it is the body’s natural reaction to infection and actually helps to shorten the duration of illness. Excessive fever (or prolonged duration) is, however, a concern and may require the attention of a health care provider. Aspirin should NEVER be given to children with fevers!
Make sure your environment is not too dry. Adequate moisture in the air is important. Use of a humidifier, vaporizer, or breathing steam from boiling water on the stove-top can help.
Brush your teeth with a combination of salt and baking soda — or use a tooth powder containing these ingredients. This will not irritate a sore throat and will make your mouth feel clean (at least for a while). The salt will also help to fight gum disease — a side benefit. Also pour a little hydrogen peroxide on your toothbrush before you brush and again as you put it away. Actually, disinfecting your toothbrush like this is good to do from time to time even when you’re healthy. Even better is to allow it to soak overnight in a glass filled high enough to cover the bristles with a 50-50 mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water.
Crushed eucalyptus leaves or oil and water in a potpourri pot, or eucalyptus oil in a vaporizer, often makes the sinuses feel better.
Nasal Spray/Wash
This formula is useful for treating and preventing colds, flu’s and allergies. It can be used either as a nasal spray or wash. The spray is useful to treat symptoms or as a prophylaxis. Use as a wash to more aggressively treat symptoms or prevent illness on known exposure.

Instructions: Use of warm water (preferably non-chlorinated, filtered or distilled) helps to dissolve ingredients and, when used as a wash, is comforting. Stir mixture until the ingredients dissolve completely. Pickling salt is preferred to regular table salt as the latter usually has undesirable additives (to enhance flow). The salt is soothing and therapeutic. While the xylitol is optional, it helps to wash away germs and pollutants in your sinuses, and makes it difficult for germs to colonize. If you have liquid NutriBiotic GSE, add 4 drops. Other brands may have different sized drops or potencies, so adjust as needed. NutriBiotic has fairly small drops and is 33% Citricidal. Some GSE brands are triple strength, or 100% Citricidal. The GSE is useful to attack germs and acts as a preservative. Without GSE, use formula within a few days or discard.
Garlic nose drops. In his book The Healing Power of Garlic Paul Bergner writes: "Garlic nose drops directly kill the viruses that cause cold or flu." He also writes about a study with mice where some were inoculated with garlic, and some were not. The flu virus was introduced to the nasal passages of each mouse. Those mice that received the garlic remained healthy, where all the others got sick. To make nose drops, Bergner instructs us to crush some garlic to obtain juice, and add ten parts water and mix well. It could be added to the saline-xylitol formula above, if you like, to enhance its germ killing abilities.
In addition to the nose drops, eating raw garlic is also helpful and has a systemic effect. Note: deodorized garlic tablets are not useful in fighting viral or bacterial infections.
To use as a wash: First, blow your nose. Then, over the bathroom sink, put one or two teaspoons of nasal wash mixture in the palm of your hand, put one nostril in the water, close off the other nostril with a finger and inhale briskly. Try to take the water far up into your sinuses. Then let the water drain out your nostril and into the sink. Repeat this several times then switch to the other nostril. If done correctly, you’ll have a sensation in your nose which is very similar to having recently taken a swim (at least with a salt water mixture; the xylitol mixture may produce a somewhat different sensation). Repeat this process, alternating between nostrils, until your nose is feeling relatively clear. The salt in the water helps to cleanse and soothe the mucus membranes and sinuses, and helps make you feel better (at least for a while). You are attacking the flu and cold viruses where they live, and diminishing their numbers (particularly if you’ve added xylitol, GSE or garlic juice). Repeating this procedure as often as needed during the day will help to shorten the duration of your illness, and make you feel better. Doing this before going to bed can help to promote sleep. This procedure can also be effective against seasonal allergies as it cleanses the sinuses and washes away irritants.
If you cannot or do not wish to make your own nasal spray, a commercial formula is available for purchase called Xlear (pronounced "clear.") It is a very good product.
